Comparison of Friction Pegs versus
Planetary Pegs

Nothing is as
illuminating as the experiences
of many people about a relatively new product. However
any individual experiences can be misleading, if they are
not based on complete information about the product and
installation.
I read
one response claiming that the peg holes will have to be
made unnecessarily big. That is a legitimate concern,
however these pegs can be obtained in different sizes.
After reading a few of these well-meant comments, I
decided to clear up the issues as well as I can. So here
it is:
First: OUR OBLIGATION AS
RESTORERS IS TO ONLY ENGAGE IN REPAIR PROCEDURES, WHICH CAN BE
REVERSED. I have tracked instrument with Planetary pegs for a
while before I started installing them myself. Initially the
demand came more from Rock and Jazz violinists who are - dare I
say- somewhat more progressive. The next group of people who
showed interest was musicians with arthritis in their hands who
could still play but had trouble tuning their instrument
without pain.
AT THIS POINT I AM WILLING TO
FIT THESE PEGS INTO ANY INSTRUMENT, IF A MUSICIAN ASKS FOR
THEM, BECAUSE I AM NOW CONVINCED THAT THERE IS NO LONG TERM
PROBLEM CONNECTED WITH THEM. QUITE TO THE CONTRARY, THEY REDUCE
POTENTIAL PROBLEMS AND COSTLY REPAIRS.
The need of replacing regular
wooden friction pegs is well established.
