Cost

Long-Term Cheaper
The Planetary pegs cost about as much as
wooden pegs, but they look more like simple ebony pegs at
$20.00 a set. They surely don't look fancy. Before installing
them I work the heads over with very fine sandpaper, which
makes them look and feel just like ebony
pegs.
AFTER THE INITIAL COST THE SAVINGS BEGIN,
BOTH IN TIME AND MONEY.
The resulting cost when using
wooden pegs can be higher via the following
scenarios:
Beginners who have not learned to
use wooden friction pegs yet often rely on heavy fine tuners on
the tailpiece. By tuning the strings up the tuner lever under
the tailpiece comes too close to the top. During playing the
chin sometimes presses on the tailpiece. The resulting ugly
scratches on the top go usually beyond the depth of the varnish
into the wood and create repair cost.
Remark: With the use of
Planetary pegs the need for tuners even for the e string is
eliminated
